Backgrounds

The use of social media has become an integral part of everyday life in today’s digital era. LinkedIn, as one of the most professional social media platforms, offers many benefits to its users, especially in building professional networks and enhancing career capabilities. According to data from LinkedIn itself, as of January 2023, this platform had more than 900 million members in more than 200 countries and regions[1]. This makes LinkedIn an invaluable tool for global communication and collaboration. In the context of organizations such as the International Forestry Students’ Association (IFSA), utilizing LinkedIn can open up great opportunities for members to connect, share knowledge, and expand their professional networks globally.

Despite its great potential, not all IFSA members fully understand or utilize LinkedIn effectively. Many members are still limited to the use of other more general social media such as Facebook or Instagram, which are not specifically designed for professional purposes[2]. This results in limitations in reaching wider professional networks and a lack of effective communication between members in various countries. For example, IFSA members from developing countries often face challenges in accessing international opportunities due to their limited professional networks. Lack of understanding and skills in using LinkedIn can hinder their potential to develop and connect with peers in the same field globally.

To overcome this problem, structured and systematic efforts are needed to increase IFSA members’ understanding and skills in using LinkedIn. A webinar focused on the importance of LinkedIn as a social communication medium between IFSA members globally could be an effective solution[3]. Through this webinar, members can learn how to create an attractive LinkedIn profile, strategies for building a network, and techniques for making the most of various LinkedIn features. In this way, IFSA members can improve their capabilities in communicating and collaborating globally, as well as opening up more opportunities for professional and career development. For example, similar programs implemented by other professional organizations have succeeded in significantly increasing engagement and connectivity among their members.[4]
