Sustainable Coastal Socio-ecological System: Shifting towards a Comprehensive Silvo-aquaculture Practices
The Workshop and Webinar Sub-Commission of International Forestry Students’ Association Local Committee Universitas Hasanuddin (IFSA LC UNHAS) held a workshop titled “Sustainable Coastal Socio-ecological System: Shifting towards a Comprehensive Silvo-aquaculture Practices” at Pajukukang Urban Village, Maros on 25 July 2024. The event was held in the Pajukukang Sub-district hall and attended by 30 forestry faculty students and 30 local communities who dominantly is a fishery. Aside from the participants, there have been some representatives from the collaborating partners such as Bulusaraung Forest Management Unit, Blue Forests Foundation, FDC UNHAs, and the Pajukukang Sub-district government itself.

The meeting is being opened by the Secretary of the Pajukukang Urban Village followed by a quick explanation regarding the current ecological disturbance happening in the village.

“We appreciate the initiation being made by the Hasanuddin University colleagues for bridging the discussion between the academician and the community in here,” said Mr. Rahman, the Secretary of the Pajukukang Urban Village. The meeting was continued by the presentation from Agung Dewa Putra, the IFSA LC UNHAS representative and early career conservationist, which explains the benefits of protecting the coastal area while sharing his real observation in his hometown on how unsustainable cultivation damages the ecosystem. The presentation is aligned with the next presentation by Mr. Wawan from the Bulusaraung Forest Management Unit, as explained “if conserving the mangrove ecosystem means rehabilitating the fish home. Which can result in a good amount of fish being caught and sustainable livelihood for the community”

Representing the Fisheries Diving Club of Hasanuddin University, Muh Chairul explained how integrating the socio-ecological aspect of the coastal community can be through the Integrated Coastal Area Management where. In the end, the representative of the Blue Forests, Mr. Rahman explains how fund the community efforts can be from many forms such as the Payment Ecosystem Services which as of now still facing several challenges. The workshop tends to be useful and is hoped to bring a positive impact for the participants
